The cold winter weather has been keeping us all inside. While it is incredibly convenient to be able to roll out of bed and hop right onto the computer, unfortunately there are plenty of areas that could leave you vulnerable to compromise – even from the comfort of your own home!
The risk comes at a greater personal cost when working from home. If your network is compromised, unauthorised agents can gain access to things like your bank accounts, shopping habits, logins, or even your home security systems and cameras.
Ultimately, the same rules apply if you’re at work or home: ensure you have an appropriate setup to keep your data safe.
So, what can you do?
- Connect to a secure network – does your router have a firewall? does your computer have antivirus? have you installed the latest security patches and updates?
- If you don’t have a secure network, utilise VPN to connect remotely to your secure business network
- Setup multifactor authentication for all logins
- Lock your devices if you walk away
- Be aware of who is around you, and who can see your screen
- If necessary – ask those you live with to sign an NDA in case they do see or hear sensitive information
- Don’t let others use your login to browse the web, use social media, or shop online
- Think before you click – does a link look dodgy or the sales ad seem too good to be true? It probably is
