Spotting Facebook scams on business pages can be a tricky game. Most Facebook users are pretty savvy about scams on their private pages, but when it comes to spotting Facebook scams on business pages we seem to draw a blank.
One recent scam, which tried to snag us, is generated from within Facebook itself. Check out the notification Quo Group’s Facebook page received.
Don't click
What happens if you did click it (we hope you didn’t!)? Well, you’ll be asked to login to a site that looks like Facebook, the scammers will then have control of your Facebook page and will lock you out and take it over. Not good!
What do I look out for?
Scammers may be tricky but most of the time they’d don’t pay much attention to detail. Even though the one above is fairly well written for a scam, there are a few things that scream ‘not quite right’!
Click WITH CAUTION
• What’s with that name? Bulk numbers are a sure giveaway that it’s not legitimate.
• We’re not a Fanpage – we’re a Business!
• Scare tactics do not make it authoritative!
• Do we even need to mention the profile picture?!
Why is 'Facebook's' sign off in square brackets?
Probably so the real Facebook doesn’t get tagged! Finally, the big giveaway! The URL! Facebook want to keep you on Facebook, even when they are telling you off.
If in doubt, don’t panic! Scammers want you to panic and click their link without thinking. They’re hoping you can’t be bothered to read the copy. They want to frighten you, play on your curiosity, or your greed!
